Fer|ri|tin [↑ Ferri-], das; -s, -e: ein rotbraunes, als körpereigener Eisenspeicher fungierendes ↑ Eisen-Protein aus Apoferritin, einem Protein vom MG 450 000, u. Eisen(III)-hydroxid-oxid mit Phosphatgruppen.

Ferritin
 
das, -s, Eisenproteid (mit bis zu 25 % Eisenanteil), das der Eisenspeicherung im Organismus dient und für die Regulierung der Resorption des Eisens von Bedeutung ist. Im Säugetierorganismus kommt Ferritin in der Dünndarmschleimhaut (Eisenresorption), im Monozyten-Makrophagen-System und v. a. in der Leber vor. Es entsteht durch Abbau von Hämoglobin in der Milz, von wo es in die Leber weitertransportiert wird.
